Tinnitus, often described as a ringing, buzzing,
or crickets sound in the ear, is a symptom that can
be related to almost every know hearing problem. It is
not considered a disease itself, but can have many different
causes. In some cases, more than one of the following can
contribute to the tinnitus:
ü Sensorineural hearing loss
ü Middle ear infections
ü Wax on the eardrum
ü Abnormalities of the hearing nerve
ü Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction
(TMD)
ü Elevated blood pressure
ü Certain medications
Sometimes, tinnitus can be medically or surgically
treated. All patients with tinnitus should have a thorough
medical audiologic evaluation by an audiologist to determine
the integrity of the auditory system and the need for possible
referral to another medical professional.
